Palm-lined streets, white sandy beaches, a plethora of golf courses and more than 100 nearby coastal islands give Fort Myers a tropical, relaxed feel that makes it a popular winter destination. Inventor Thomas Edison and automaker Henry Ford made their winter homes in Fort Myers, and visitors can tour their estates, including Edison's laboratory. The city's annual Festival of Lights pays homage to the famous inventor and features two weeks of events that culminate in a nighttime parade. Fort Myers' parks are recreation havens, offering biking, hiking and paddling trails, including Manatee Park, which houses a herd of endangered Florida manatees. Featuring over 50 famous public and private golf courses spread out over the area, retirees and vacationers flock to the "City of Palms."
